1. What is LED? |
LED stands for Light Emitting Diode. LED is a type of semiconductor used to send and receive signals by converting electric signals to infrared ray or light, using the property of compound semiconductor This device uses wavelength, which created when voltage is given to semiconductor, if the wavelength is visible, to create radiation effect. Compound semiconductors made of GaAs, GaP, GaAs1-xPx, Ga1-xAlxAs, InP, or In1-xGaxP are used. |

2. Characteristics of LED (Light Emitting Diode) |
Very low electricity consumption due to high luminous efficiency (1/8 of electric bulb, 1/2 of fluorescent lamp)
Small light source which enables to make devices smaller, thinner and lightweight.
Long life (50~100 times longer than others)
Require no preheating time since it is not light emitting which needs heat or electric discharge. Speed of turning light on and off is very fast. (2 million times faster than others)
Require less parts since flickering circuit and driver equipment can be simplified.
Strong and stable against shocks because it has no gas and filament.
Low electricity consumption for stable direct current lighting. High repetition and pulse movement are available. It causes less tiredness of optic nerve.
Intelligent light source
No waste generated since it can be used semi-permanently.
Environment-friendly light source because LED does not use mercury or discharge gas as seen in fluorescent light
Full color LED is available thanks to commercialization of blue LED, and its price declines substantially.
LED is small in size, and it is expandable limitlessly. A case in point is electric sign. |
